Laptopsforless.com Laptop Parts

Slashdot redeemed itself today by posting a good thread on obtaining parts for your laptop. I checked out Laptopsforless.com and was able to browse for parts for my Thinkpad. While my favorite place to buy RAM remains Crucial, I'll keep Laptopsforless in mind when I need a battery or AC adapter.

I started to read this section on TCP sequence numbers. I read the first line and you state that the ip address of the ftp.netbsd.org device is 204.152.184.75, that ip isn't even listed in the trace. the ip is 62.243.72.50... why would anyone read this when you don't even have the ip addresses correct. That is just in the first line.

I figured out you're talking about Appendix A in my Tao book, which has nothing to do with this blog entry.

If you read the section properly you'll see it's a FTP connection to ftp.freebsd.org, which when I wrote the book was 62.243.72.50 as shown in the trace. ftp.netbsd.org isn't involved. What I wrote is correct.

MITRE ATT&CK Tactics Are Not Tactics

Just what are "tactics"? Introduction MITRE ATT&CK  is a great resource, but something about it has bothered me since I first heard about it several years ago. It's a minor point, but I wanted to document it in case it confuses anyone else. The MITRE ATT&CK Design and Philosophy document from March 2020 says the following: At a high-level, ATT&CK is a behavioral model that consists of the following core components: • Tactics, denoting short-term, tactical adversary goals during an attack; • Techniques, describing the means by which adversaries achieve tactical goals; • Sub-techniques, describing more specific means by which adversaries achieve tactical goals at a lower level than techniques; and • Documented adversary usage of techniques, their procedures, and other metadata.
