Chapter 18 from Tao Online

With the launch of the new SearchSecurityChannel.com site, I can report that chapter 18 of my first book, The Tao of Network Security Monitoring: Beyond Intrusion Detection is now available online. Chapter 18 is "Tactics for Attacking Network Security Monitoring." It outlines technical means attackers may degrade or deny operations to detect and respond to intrusions.

It's cool that that there are chapters available online, but just buy the book. "The Tao of Network Security Monitoring" is my all-time favorite infosec book. It honestly changed my whole career perspective. I can assure you that even after you've read once it won't just sit there on a shelf. And no... this isn't Richard's Mom.

MITRE ATT&CK Tactics Are Not Tactics

Just what are "tactics"? Introduction MITRE ATT&CK  is a great resource, but something about it has bothered me since I first heard about it several years ago. It's a minor point, but I wanted to document it in case it confuses anyone else. The MITRE ATT&CK Design and Philosophy document from March 2020 says the following: At a high-level, ATT&CK is a behavioral model that consists of the following core components: • Tactics, denoting short-term, tactical adversary goals during an attack; • Techniques, describing the means by which adversaries achieve tactical goals; • Sub-techniques, describing more specific means by which adversaries achieve tactical goals at a lower level than techniques; and • Documented adversary usage of techniques, their procedures, and other metadata.
