I've written about problems with security clearances before. Now I read Pentagon Halts Contractor Clearances. I recommend reading the article for details, but the bottom line is this sort of failure requires Congressional investigation. A private company with the same sorts of operational disasters would be without clients and bankrupt by now. The Federal government justs plods along.

The more projects you require to have a Security Clearance, the more Security Clearances you are going have to process. Cause and Effect.
Ever read "Snow Crash" ? The description of the Feds as nothing more than a marginalized, power-hungry and paranoid bunch of doofuses is really seeming prescient.
Who says there's a shortage of these candidates? Look at resources like ClearanceJobs.com or Dice.com and there are thousands of these people around.
