The August 2010 Hakin9 magazine is available for free download in .pdf format. I think they are publishing shorter magazines, but more frequently? I always like Matt Jonkman's articles. He mentions creating a new commercial IDS ruleset, which he announced in late June in Emerging Threats Announces Call for Developers to Create New and Improved Rule Set . I missed it until now however.

The new June 2010 Hakin9 has been published in .pdf form. It looks like they replaced the registration-based download with a link straight to the .pdf -- nice. The article Testing Flash Memory Forensic Tools – part two looks interesting, and I always like reading whatever Matt Jonkman writes. Check it out -- it's free!

I just received a review copy of the 5/2009 issue of Hakin9 magazine . Several articles look interesting, such as Windows Timeline Analysis by Harlan Carvey, The Underworld of CVV Dumping by Julian Evans, and a few others on malware analysis and ASLR. Check it out!

Hakin9 published an "extended edition" magazine recently. This "best of" issue is 218 pages long and contains a nice selection of past articles. Although the writing isn't as uniformly smooth as one would find in the late, great Sys Admin magazine, I continue to find interesting articles in Hakin9. (By "smooth" I mean that articles written by non-native speakers tend to reflect that English isn't their first language. Hakin9 might consider hiring a native English copyeditor to rework articles prior to publication.) There's really no other printed security periodical like Hakin9. The technical level is higher than that of 2600 magazine, for example. You don't find articles on security management like you might in Information Security Magazine or SC Magazine, either.

I just received a review copy of the 04/2009 Hakin9 magazine. I am most interested in reading part two of Tyler Hudak 's article on automating malware analysis. Cartsen Kohler's article on exploiting Windows via printer drivers looks interesting too. Check it out!

One of my favorites appears in the 3/2009 issue, titled Automating Malware Analysis, by Tyler Hudak. Tyler is our team's reverse engineer and he authors the The Security Shoggoth blog. The latest issue of Hakin9 has been released. Several articles look interesting, including Javascript Obfuscation Techniques by David Sancho and an interview with Marcus Ranum. Hakin9 briefly interviewed Harlan Carvey and me. I've uploaded the one page of the interview if you'd like to read it.

The latest issue of Hakin9 has been published. This is a subscription magazine published in Europe. Articles which caught my attention include Programming with Libpcap - Sniffing the network from our own application by Luis Martin Garcia, Reverse Engineering Binaries by Aditya K. Sood aka 0kn0ck, and Writing IPS Rules – Part 4 by Matthew Jonkman.

My friend James Rodgers pointed me towards a European hacking magazine, Hakin9 . It's been around for a while, but the English edition just launched last month. Looking through the contents, the articles appear more tech-oriented and certainly more advanced than the average 2600 magazine. The cover story, pictured at right, by Kamil Folga, discusses Cisco IOS security. It's well-written, with command syntax, diagrams, output listings, screen shots, and helpful advice. A one year, 6 issue, hard copy subscription costs 38 EUR or US $51. The .pdf version is 19 EUR or US $25.
