He says hackers call themselves "artists." Spies are more like scientists, in the sense that they can get repeatable results. Spies enjoy tradecraft and training, whereas hackers rely on ability and practice.Richard Bejtlichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13512184196416665417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088979.post-1146067874731494242006-04-26T12:11:00.000-04:002006-04-26T12:11:00.000-04:00I recall some quotation sans attribution:Math is t...I recall some quotation sans attribution:

Math is the part of science you'd have left if you woke up in the morning and the universe was gone.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088979.post-1146054203603616032006-04-26T08:23:00.000-04:002006-04-26T08:23:00.000-04:00When I say "science is boring; art is cool" I am s...When I say "science is boring; art is cool" I am stating a perception, not my opinion. I think both are interesting.

I am not dismissing the creative side of science, either. I am stressing the repeatability aspect. I recognize repeatability is necessary but not sufficient for scientific endeavors.

I do not consider math to be science.Richard Bejtlichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13512184196416665417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4088979.post-1146046386442761932006-04-26T06:13:00.000-04:002006-04-26T06:13:00.000-04:00Science can be automated? If you're to criticize the term art -- which simply means the intuitive, human pattern recognition and development side of software engineering -- then why not criticize the use of science? I find it a gross misuse of the term in many cases. Repeatability is an element of science, but it is not sufficient for science.

I rarely hear coders referring to themselves as artists; I've heard the "art and science of programming" now and then, but never it as a purely artistic field. However, ask mathematicians, chess players, and other highly analytical specialists, and they'll speak to the "art" side to their field. The world of mathematical proofs often requires the stroke of brilliance to put concepts together in ways no one else has, and that's essentially the basis for art.jshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14237717382869811560noreply@blogger.com
